How to be in the now: 5 ways to focus in the present moment

The ability to be in the present moment is a major component to mental wellness.

To be in the now is to be present, avoiding distractions which I know it’s almost impossible. However, having the ability to pay attention to your surroundings, to take control of your thoughts, and fully recognize those little things that would typically slip away due to lack of mindfulness is most crucial to our well-being. For example, you are at a party with lots of friends, and instead of engaging in a conversation with someone, you are busy checking your phone for notifications every single second that passes. And when you are alone, your thoughts dwell on how you wished you have been invited to that party. Well, here is my little list on how you can become better at being in the moment.

  1. Stop over thinking situations.
Overthinking is something we are all guilty of when we find ourselves in difficult situations, we tend to start over analyzing that situation. It might be something as simple as what to have for breakfast, or what to wear to that friend’s party. The bottom line is, overthinking causes emotional stress and, according to research, it can result in a lot of health problems such as high anxiety, and lack of sleep.
  2. Focus on where you are right now
Being present where you are right now could be, enjoying that company of your friends, partner and, children. I realized that true happiness isn’t buying that expensive car or having 100,000 followers on my Instagram, but something small, numerous and already here. For example, that smile of someone you love. A decent breakfast. That warm shower I took earlier. It’s all about stopping to smell the roses.
  3. Show gratitude
According to a quote by Oprah Winfrey, be thankful for what you have; you will end up having more, if you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never have enough.
  4. Embrace your fear and challenges
Maybe one of your Challenges could be waking up at 5 am, going to work, performing well in that presentation in front of all those people. To get that work done before a specific date or time. It can also be putting on that sexy outfit for your hubby or perhaps trying that new restaurant. It can be things as simple as these, or, things a little bit more comprehensive, what matters is that you get up! Get face to face with that challenge or fear and get it done. (slay the dragon)
  5. Meditation
Meditation can be a lot of things. For example, going for a run can help you clear your thoughts. Meditation doesn’t have to be so complicated; all that is required of you is to sit or lay on your coach and try to not think for a minute or two; you can also go a bit further for 10-15 minutes by just focusing on your breath, and try to be present.

It’s so hard to be in the now when the world is constantly so fast. I’m guilty, sometimes my mind runs faster than lightening. Thankfully, I know how to bring myself back. I’m a licensed therapist and I love teaching grounding and meditation techniques to my clients.

Love your post, t hanks! I too have a tendency to overthink things and sometimes need to stop and slow down a bit to refocus. I find that taking a walk outside in the middle of my day and breathing in fresh air helps me calm down and gain a new perspective!
